Summer break is just a couple of weeks away, which means we’re about to hit that classic 90-degree Indiana heat. Keeping three kids entertained without losing your mind (or melting) is practically an Olympic sport.
One of the best parts about living in the northern and western suburbs is the sheer number of community perks designed specifically for families. If you’re gearing up for summer break and need a reliable place to cool off, I’ve got you covered. Here are some of my family’s favorite spots to splash around without driving all the way out to a massive theme park.
1. Westermeier Commons at Central Park (Carmel)
Located right in the heart of Carmel, this spot is a masterpiece of community planning. Adjacent to their massive, futuristic playground is an incredible, free splash pad featuring giant cattails, flower showers, and ground geysers.
- Local Tip: The splash pad is fully contained, which makes keeping an eye on multiple running kids so much easier. Pack a cooler and claim a shaded spot on the grass.
2. Roy G. Holland Memorial Park (Fishers)
If you spend any time in Fishers, Holland Park is a staple. Their community splash pad is simple, easily accessible, and perfectly situated next to a large playground and covered picnic pavilions.
- Local Tip: Because it’s free and highly popular, it gets packed on weekend afternoons. Try hitting it right when it opens at 10:00 a.m. to beat the crowds and the midday sun.
3. Splash Island Family Waterpark (Plainfield)
When you want the full water park experience without the exorbitant admission fees, Splash Island is the ultimate destination. This 4.5-acre Caribbean-themed park has a 900-foot lazy river, huge water slides, and a zero-depth entry pool that is perfect for toddlers.
- Local Tip: A day pass here is super affordable and includes access to the adjacent indoor recreation center. If a surprise summer thunderstorm rolls in, you can seamlessly move the fun inside.
4. West Park (Carmel)
The newly reimagined West Park features one of the most unique free splash areas in the state. Instead of traditional brightly colored plastic structures, it is designed to look and feel like a river canyon, complete with rock walls and waterfalls built directly into the space.
- Local Tip: The massive boulders make for great seating, but they do get slippery. Keep a close eye on early walkers, but definitely let your older kids enjoy the adventure of climbing through the canyon!
5. Hummel Park (Plainfield)
This sprawling 205-acre green space in Hendricks County offers a little bit of everything. After the kids wear themselves out on the nature playground or the vintage twirly slides, head straight over to their free splash pad to cool off.
- Local Tip: Hummel Park has an extensive paved trail system. It’s a great place to bring the bikes for a morning ride and use the splash pad as the grand finale.
Find a Neighborhood with Better Perks
Location is everything, especially when the temperature spikes and you need a quick escape from the house. Having top-tier parks and splash pads just five minutes down the road completely changes how you experience summer in Indiana.
